Activity 1

Now that we know some writing strategies, let's put our knowledge into practice.
The activities below give you the opportunity to find out how well you understand the writing process. If you have a difficult time recognizing these strategies, you may return to review the information in the Let's Study section and then try these practice activities again.

The first thing we do when we write is to get our ideas down on paper. Let's try a brainstorming activity related to daily routines. After that, we need to review our writing for any errors. Did you spell all the words correctly? Are the sentences in the correct order? Will our readers understand us? Let's try some editing practice.

Directions

All good writers check their writing for mistakes. Until you get the hang of editing, an editing checklist helps you hunt for one type of mistake at a time. It should include:

  1. Capitals
  2. Punctuation
  3. Spelling
  4. Verb tense
  5. Subject-verb agreement
  6. Sentence fragments

Check your writing for each item, correct the mistakes, and cross it off your list.
