While the cost of storing data for later manipulation and analysis has decreased in recent years, the amounts of data needed often make local storage prohibitive or slow. In recent years, the technology and communications industries have become common to run or lease space in the cloud to run applications, store data, or host one or more servers. This article describes five of the largest providers in the industry and briefly highlights the services each company offers. Most, if not all, of these 'giants' touch on millions of lives and similar numbers of companies each day. How many of these providers do you know, and what services do they provide? Amazon:
There is no question about the fact that the number 1 belongs to Amazon. About infrastructure, this company invented IaaS market (Infrastructure as a cloud). Cloud computing of Amazon supply a series of choices, from supplying storage space which worth a few cents a month to lease supercomputer with 5.000 USD per hour.
Amazon is focusing on the segment of businesses by adding more security features for its clouds and recruiting sales business. Certainly, it will not stand by and look VMware, Citrix and OpenStack snatching their customers. It's surprising that an online retailer could create a change in the IT industry and in our daily lives.
VMware:
Until now, VMware has not provided services on the cloud platform itself. The company only specialize in supplying vCloud software to build up cloud.
VMware is one of the biggest competitors in the market of cloud computing, competes with OpenStack technology (which is operated by a consortium of vendors IBM, Rackspace, HP) and Citrix.
However, in March, VMware has changed its strategy when publishing the plan to launch a public cloud itself. This is an amusing choice because there are about 200 providers of cloud computing services built on vCloud and now VMware has to compete with them.
Microsoft:
Microsoft is also a huge business of cloud computing with Azure.
This is a popular PaaS cloud with various developers writing applications using Microsoft's encryption tool. The company also extends Azure into IaaS market, and even allows users run Linux on their own clouds with a lower-promise prices than Amazon's. Besides, Microsoft also comes up with many business applications on its cloud from SQL Server database to Microsoft Office 365.
Saleforce.com:
The name Salesforce.com is almost synonymous to cloud computing. Salesforce.com has demonstrated that the world wants to buy a software like a service.
In 2012, the company has enlarged a series of new fields. Salesforce.com has spent more than 1 billion USD to buy Radian6 and Buddy Media Cloud Marketing. And in 2013, it also borrowed 1 billion USD to implement the acquisition. In addition, Salesforce.com is also known as one of the most popular PaaS clouds to run home-based applications of your own.
Google:
In 2012, Google has caused big waves in the cloud computing industry when announcing the launch of its own IaaS service, project Compute Engine.
However, before that, Google has done a bunch of stuff on a public cloud PaaS called Google App Engine, provided Google Cloud Storage and launching Google Big Query application. Besides, the company also supplies applications for business customers and individual customers like Google Drive and Google Apps, Chrome OS with Chromebook and Chromebox, along with best-selling computer devices running applications on the cloud computing platform.
