Sentence Agreement Discussion

For this discussion, you will choose a couple of sentences from the Present Tense Discussion in Unit 1 of the ESL002 course and practice identifying any agreement used in that sentence.

At the start of the course, we reviewed number, person, and case as they apply to nouns, pronouns, and verbs to create sentence agreement. Now that you know more about subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement, you can use the rules more confidently to express your ideas in English.

Instructions:

For this discussion, look through the responses to the Present Tense Discussion in Unit 1 of the ESL002 course and choose two to three sentences from any paragraph. Then, identify any nouns used as subjects and pronouns used to replace them to avoid repetition. Finally, decide whether the predicates or main verbs agree with their subjects and whether the pronouns agree with their antecedents.

Share your answers and see what kind of samples your classmates selected. If you wish, reply to your classmates with feedback or suggestions about their submissions.

Example:

Here are some sentences I found in the ESL002 present tense forum:

I get up at 7 am every day. But my husband gets up at 5 am to go to work and not be late. At 7:30 am he returns home to get breakfast, so I cook breakfast for us once I am awake.

Sentence 2: The predicate (main verb) is "gets up", which is third person singular. Who gets up? ="husband" is a noun used as a subject, and it is third person singular. The subject and verb in this sentence agree.

Sentence 3: The first predicate is "returns", which is also third person singular. Who gets up? = "he" is a pronoun used as a subject, and it is third person singular masculine. Its antecedent is the noun "husband" in sentence 2, which is also third person singular. Therefore, the pronoun and its antecedent agree.
