Local Area Network Service Scan and Wake on LAN

Follow the steps detailed in this document in order to control your computer from a mobile device.

Local Area Network Service Scan and Wake on LAN

For this activity, you need to have several devices connected to your network router such as WiFi access points or a wired network router. Then follow the steps below to find out which device is active in the network and what kind of services each device provides.

  1. Turn on several devices in a local area network. For example, turn on other desktop or laptop computers and some mobile devices with WiFi (or wired access) to your access point (or wired router).
  2. Run the app that you have downloaded from your mobile device and try to scan all networked devices in the local area network, and the services running on these devices.
  3. For each identified IP address, scan the services running on that IP address. For each service identified, try to test the TCP connection by sending some command to that server. You need to be familiar with the protocol messages for the corresponding services.
  4. For each identified IP address, carry out the following three activities:
    1. Ping the IP address to measure the round-trip time for packets to reach that IP address.
    2. Traceroute the IP address to identify the hops to reach the IP address.
    3. Use the Wake On LAN tool to wake up a sleeping desktop computer with this IP address. In order to carry out this part of the assignment, your target desktop computer needs to support the Wake On LAN function. For details on how to set this up, check: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-LAN
  5. Use the “Domain Lookup” command to translate a domain name like www.saylor.org into an IP address, and vice versa.
