5. Renewing The Social Contract

5.7 Actions for civil society

The Commission recognises that a crucially important role for civil society is to monitor institutions and ensure that business, government, and community organizations are transparent and respect the rule of national and international law.

Equally, civil society has a responsibility to engage in dialogue with all sectors and advocate for changes to law and practice where they are failing or are inadequate to deal with corruption, new technology, and socially destructive practices or disruptive change.

For trade unions, there is a specific responsibility to engage in social dialogue with business and, where relevant, government to ensure rights, fair wages, and safe and secure work are both agreed upon and respected as part of the social contract.

All parties need to ensure the guarantee of social protection and labor market institutions that secures a dignified future for societies and a fair competitive basis for business.
