Group Dynamics

We have previously looked at group norms, but how much does our conformity matter? Read this text to examine group dynamics and how groups operate. The text recounts an experiment performed by psychologist Solomon Asch that studied how we can be influenced by our desire to conform with the group.

Introduction

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe how size influences group dynamics
  • Explain how conformity is impacted by groups

A group of soldiers is shown marching down the road while spectators look on.
Figure 1. Cadets illustrate how strongly conformity can define groups.

Now that we have learned about different types of groups, let's examine group dynamics, or the ways in which groups operate, and the impact these groups have on individual members.
