Today, I decided to try the "Context Clues" strategy to build my vocabulary. This strategy involves figuring out the meaning of unfamiliar words by examining the words and sentences around them.

What I Did:

While reading an article about climate change, I came across several unfamiliar words. Instead of immediately looking them up, I tried to infer their meanings based on the context. After guessing, I checked the dictionary to confirm if I was correct.

New Words I Learned:

  1. Mitigation – From the context, I guessed it meant something like “reducing” or “easing” a problem. I was close! It means reducing the severity of something.

  2. Anthropogenic – I guessed it had to do with humans because of the prefix “anthro.” It actually means “originating from human activity.”

  3. Precipitation – I knew this had to do with weather, but I confirmed it specifically refers to rain, snow, sleet, etc., that falls to the ground.

Did It Work?

Yes! Using context clues helped me stay engaged with the reading and made learning new words more active. It also improved my confidence in understanding complex texts without needing to stop constantly.

Final Thoughts:

The Context Clues strategy is practical and easy to use with any reading material. I plan to continue using it and recommend it to others who want to grow their vocabulary naturally through reading.
