The English language has eight parts of speech. They are nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.
- Nouns are naming words. That means a noun is a word for a person, place, thing, or idea. for example, The baby boy playing with his toys.
- Pronouns are words used in place of a noun. for example The baby boy playing with his toys. He is very happy.
- Verbs are action words. For example, The baby boy playing with his toys.
- An adjective modifies or describes a noun or pronoun. for example, The baby boy playing with his toys.
- An adverb describes or modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb, but never a noun. for example The baby boy playing with his toys. He is very happy.
- A preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to form a phrase modifying another word in the sentence. for example, The baby boy playing with his toys.
- A conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses, and makes the relationship between the sentences. for example, The baby boy playing with his toys and he is very happy.
- An interjection is a word used to express emotion. for example, The baby boy playing with his toys. Wow!
