Today, I chose to build my vocabulary by focusing on prefixes and suffixes. This strategy helps me understand the meaning of unfamiliar words by breaking them into parts. I practiced with words like supervise, decode, impossible, and meaningless. By identifying the root word and the affix, I could guess the meaning even without a dictionary.
For example:
Supervise → supervisor, supervision, supervises
Charge → overcharged
Place → misplaced
This strategy worked well for me because it gave me tools to decode unfamiliar words quickly. I learned new words like anathema, dilapidated, and grievances, and I now understand how affixes like dis-, mis-, -less, and -ment change word meanings.
I’ll continue using this method, especially when reading academic texts or preparing for exams. It makes vocabulary learning more logical and less about memorization.
