Tense Consistency Discussion

A few years ago, my family and I went camping in a national park. It was the first time we had decided to try camping instead of our usual beach vacation. On the second night, just as we were sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows, we heard rustling in the bushes behind us. My dad grabbed his flashlight and pointed it toward the noise. To our surprise, it wasn’t a raccoon or a deer—it was a small black bear sniffing around our food cooler!

Everyone froze. My little brother whispered, “What do we do?” but nobody had a good answer. My mom, trying to stay calm, started clapping her hands and shouting to scare it off. Surprisingly, the bear stopped, looked at us for a moment, and then ambled away into the forest.

After that, we all laughed nervously and agreed that maybe next time we should stick to the beach. That bear encounter became the highlight of our camping trip and a story we tell every time someone asks about our "wild" adventures.
