Let's analyze these sentences and replace the general or negative connotation words with more specific, concrete, or positive ones.

1- Maria crawled out of the pool at the end of her twenty laps.
Crawled : has a slightly negative connotation, implying slowness or exhaustion. We can replace it with:
  • Exited gracefully
  • Emerged effortlessly
  • Climbed out briskly
2- I put my clothes somewhere and can't find them.

Somewhere: is vague and doesn't provide any useful information. We can replace it with:
  • On the chair
  • In the drawer
  • On the floor
Can't find them: has a negative connotation. We can replace it with:
  • Misplaced them
  • Temporarily lost track of them
3- I smelled something strong when I opened the refrigerator door.
Something strong: is vague and potentially unpleasant. We can replace it with:
  • A pungent odor: (if it's unpleasant)
  • A sharp aroma of cheese : (if it's cheese)
  • The fragrant scent of fresh herbs

Re: Let's Discuss Vocabulary

by Garalde, Juvie Ann, M. -
"Maria emerged from the pool at the end of her twenty laps." This is already quite good. To make it even better, you could add a detail about how she felt or looked: "Maria emerged from the pool, water streaming from her hair, feeling invigorated after her twenty laps." or "Maria emerged from the pool, her face flushed with exertion, after completing her twenty laps."

"I stored my clothes somewhere and can't locate them." This is accurate but a bit bland. "Stored" is quite general. Consider something like: "I hung my clothes in the closet and now I can't locate them." or "I tossed my clothes on the bed and now I can't find them." The addition of a location makes it more concrete.

"I detected a pungent aroma when I opened the refrigerator door." "Pungent" is a strong word. While accurate, it might imply something unpleasant. If you want to keep the mystery, you could say something like "I detected a sharp, unfamiliar aroma..." or if you know what it was, you could be more precise: "I detected the sharp scent of spoiled milk..."

Maria emerged from the pool at the end of her twenty laps.
("Emerged" has a more neutral or positive connotation compared to "crawled," which can imply difficulty or exhaustion.)

I misplaced my clothes and can't find them.
("Misplaced" is a more neutral and specific term than "put somewhere," which lacks detail, and it doesn't imply carelessness as strongly as "can't find.")

I smelled something pungent when I opened the refrigerator door.
("Pungent" has a more neutral or even slightly positive connotation compared to "strong," which can sound unpleasant depending on the context.)

Maria climbed out of the pool at the end of her twenty laps.

Replaced "crawled" (which has a connotation of struggle or exhaustion) with "climbed," which sounds more controlled and intentional.

I put my clothes in the closet and can't find them.

Replaced "somewhere" (vague) with "in the closet," making it more specific.

I smelled a pungent odor when I opened the refrigerator door.

Replaced "something strong" (vague) with "a pungent odor," which is more descriptive.

Maria crawled out of the pool at the end of her twenty laps.
Revised: Maria emerged from the pool at the end of her twenty laps.
Explanation: "Crawled" has a more negative connotation (suggesting exhaustion), while "emerged" is more neutral and positive, focusing on the completion of her task.
I put my clothes somewhere and can't find them.
Revised: I placed my clothes somewhere and can't locate them.
Explanation: "Put" is vague, while "placed" is more specific. "Can't find" was replaced with "can't locate" to add clarity and a more positive tone.
I smelled something strong when I opened the refrigerator door.
Revised: I smelled a distinct aroma when I opened the refrigerator door.
Explanation: "Something strong" has a negative connotation, which could imply unpleasantness. "Distinct aroma" suggests a specific and neutral or possibly positive scent.

  1. Original: Maria crawled out of the pool at the end of her twenty laps.
Revised: Maria climbed out of the pool after completing her twenty laps.

    • "Crawled" has a tired or weak connotation. "Climbed" sounds more neutral and capable.

  2. Original: I put my clothes somewhere and can't find them.
Revised: I left my clothes in the laundry room and now I can't locate them.

    • "Somewhere" is too vague. "Left", "laundry room", and "locate" are clearer and more descriptive.

  3. Original: I smelled something strong when I opened the refrigerator door.
Revised: I noticed a pungent odor of spoiled milk when I opened the refrigerator door.

    • "Something strong" is vague; "pungent odor of spoiled milk" is more specific and vivid.
