The Parts of Speech

I've learned from this lesson that Parts of Speech play an important role in our communication (spoken and written). They are the building blocks of language, and being familiar with each one of them will help us put words together accurately for clear communication. I think the best way to easily remember them is by grouping them.

The first group is Nouns, Pronouns, Adjectives, and Articles. A noun refers to a person, things, places, events, and ideas. It is usually accompanied by adjectives that serve as its descriptor and an article that introduces it. Once put together, you'll form a noun phrase. For example: The devoted mother (article + adjective + noun). Not to forget, the pronoun—it simply takes the place of a noun to avoid repetition.

The second group is Verbs and Adverbs. A verb is an action word, and telling how the action is done is called an adverb. For example: She sang beautifully.

The last group is Conjunctions and Prepositions. This is the group that cannot stand alone, and their purpose is to connect or put together the other parts of speech to formulate a sentence. Conjunctions are used to connect phrases, clauses, and ideas, whereas prepositions are used to determine the direction or relationship of places and time.

Also, don't forget the interjections! My favorite among them and the easiest one to remember. They are always capitalized and punctuated and add emotion to sentences. Yay! 😄

Thank you! Can't wait to move on to the next lesson.
