The building blocks of the English language are known as “parts of speech”. They help us categorize words by their function in a particular sentence — whether that is “naming items,” “showing action,” or “linking two or more other words together.” The primary parts of speech are: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. Having a solid knowledge of the parts of speech will assist students who are learning to create clear, simply stated sentences, enhance their effectiveness as communicators, and accurately comprehend and produce meaning by both reading and/or writing.
