Observations on These Patterns

  • Intransitive vs. Transitive: The first and last sentences use intransitive verbs ("lives" and "work"), meaning they don't require a direct object to complete the thought. Instead, they rely on prepositional phrases to provide context about Place and Time.

  • Direct Objects: The middle two sentences follow a clear S-V-O pattern. These are very effective for professional communication because they are direct and easy for the reader to follow.

  • The "Manner" Column: You’ll notice the "Manner" column is empty here. If we wanted to add more detail, we could say: "They work diligently (Manner) in the mornings."

Classmate Interaction

When you post this in the forum, you might want to ask your classmates:

"I noticed that most of these sentences focus on either the 'Place' or the 'Object.' Did anyone choose a sentence that used a 'Manner' adverb (like quickly or carefully)? I find those are often the hardest to place in the SVOMPT order!"
