Suppose that you had to explain to a member of your family or one of your closest friends the concept of an information system. How would you define it? Write a one-paragraph description in your own words that you feel would best describe an information system to your friends or family.
Section 1.2 Discussion
Great explanation! You’ve really captured the essence of an information system by breaking down its components and showing how they work together in a practical example like iTunes.
On a related note, if you're interested in how these systems are built on mobile platforms, you might want to explore ios development. Developing apps for iPhones or iPads involves creating software (apps like iTunes) that interacts with data (music libraries), hardware (the devices), and users (people interacting with the app). iOS development is a great field for creating seamless and user-friendly experiences, just like the one you described with iTunes.
In my own words, I would an information system to my friends/family the way I understand it. Information systems are made up of five components- hardware, software, data, people & processes. Hardware the physical, tangible parts of a computer. Softwares are the programs that tell the hardware what to do for example - Excel, Powerpoint, Word etc. Data is information that is yet to be computed or in this case, processed. With the first components, it’s the people that do something about it. Otherwise it’s sort of floating in the air. People use a set of steps to achieve a goal which is called process.
An information system is like a digital brain that helps organize, store, process, and retrieve information. It's the backbone of how we manage data, whether it's in the form of documents, emails, images, or videos. Imagine it as a super-efficient librarian who not only keeps track of where everything is stored but also helps you find exactly what you need in a split second. From the simplest tasks like managing your contacts to complex operations like analyzing big data for businesses, information systems are essential for almost every aspect of modern life, making things more organized, efficient, and accessible.
Information system is a set interrelated components that collect, manipulate, process, store and disseminate in order to achieve organizational goal. It has 5 different components. Hardware, software, data, people and process. Hardware is physical part of computer, tangible and can be touched. Software is set of instruction that tell the hardware what to do. Data is raw fact that is manipulated by software. People also anybody who use and participate in information system. Process is a set procedure which is used to perform specific task. Information system has competitive advantage for organization by improving business process and efficiency.

An information system is a collection of interrelated componets such as People, Technologies (Computer hardwares and softwares as well as Telecommunications networks), Procedures, Policies that work together to Collect, Store, Retrieve, Process, disseminate, Organise and make available Data and Information Resources needed to support business or organizational operations to attain efficiency, economy and competitive advantage in the knowledge economy.
This information system is like the brain of an organization or company, helping them make decisions, improve efficiency, and achieve goals.
For example, an information system in an online store helps them manage inventory, process orders, and handle payments. An information system in a bank helps them store customer data, conduct financial transactions, and provide customer service.
In short, information systems are essential tools in this digital age that help us organize and utilize information better.
Information systems can be viewed as having five main components: hardware, software, data, people, and processes.
tangible parts such as the hardware that pieces together what's necessary in order to have the other parts, effectively align and run. The software I would describe as the brain of the motor in order process the information that is being utilized in order to function. Data are the facts that will allow the vehicle to maneuver correctly as it specifies facts and people are necessary to input these facts into the system, while the processes are the functions to allow it all to come together.
Information Systems
Well, technically speaking, information systems or ISs are interrelated components working together to collect, process, store and disseminate information to support decision making; coordination, control, analysis and visualisation of an organisation. Now, to break it so that it becomes simple and clear to comprehend: information system as my definition, is well, has to do with how information is, can be transmitted or distributed for a purpose of an organisation. So, IS actually,is a set of must know components functioning together to collect, process, store and distribute information for decision making. For instance, a firm wishes to have an increase in both its revenues and sales, so, inorder to see how strategically its goals are being accomplished, it has first- hardware/technology that helps to display what goes within a computer; software that supports it with instructions on how a hardware should behave; people- this is essential because the people help to create the hardware and software technology so that information can be transmitted easily; process- a series of steps taken to accomplish a desired goal; data- a collection of facts- so an organisation will need data to use it to make decisions . So all of these needed to record information ; not one of them should be lacking. Information system is indispensable; it's found in banks, hospitals, shops etc.
Hi, everyone 😊😊👋🏿!
Please would someone mind answering this question for me - is networking communication another component to Information System, or rather is it optional?
I'll be grateful to anyone's response 😊🙏!
Thks
An information system is a combination of technology, people, and processes that work together to collect, store, manage, and distribute data. It helps organizations and individuals make decisions, solve problems, and complete tasks more efficiently. For example, think of it like the apps on your phone that store your contacts, keep track of appointments, or let you order things online. These systems organize and manage the information you need so that everything runs smoothly and you can access what you need easily. It's all about using technology to handle information in a smart, organized way.

An information System is a set of interrelated ,useful assets which collect, store, process, analyse, and transmit data. They are interconnected components which integrate and must work cohesively to enable and facilitate decision-making for users in an organization.
Information system is the way in which information is organized for a further practical use. Simple that, but with two aggregate: technology and people. Data is everywhere, such personal data, scientific data, organizational data. People applied technology like computers to convert data in information and use that information for a useful purpose, such a list quickly the date birthday of all family members or organize efficiently the activities of a group of people, like in football teams. If we think carefully, information systems are in everyday activities, for example in supermarkets to provide stock to user, same in restaurants, libraries, shops, airports, universities...
