        This course provides an overview of the basic Mathematics concepts most commonly tested on the general knowledge certification exams for teachers. Some prerequisite knowledge of middle and high school math is assumed, but the review materials are suggested where appropriate. Unit 1 starts the course with a few self-tests to check your knowledge of basic pre-algebra topics before proceeding to the rest of the course. Topics covered are types of real numbers, divisibility rules, order of operations, percentages, and word problems involving percentages. Unit 2 reviews the basic definitions in geometry and focuses primarily on the properties of triangles and quadrilaterals and calculating perimeter, area, and volume. Unit 3 consists of topics typically studied in beginning and intermediate algebra courses: linear and quadratic equations and their graphs, inequalities, and introductory function concepts. Unit 4 introduces the study of probability statistics by overviewing methods of collecting, representing, and analyzing data, including drawing conclusions from the results of studies and avoiding bias.

        This course is not intended to be your first exposure to mathematics and will not teach the subject. This course gives an opportunity to practice and assess your grasp and mastery of standard middle- to high-school-level subject matter. Should you discover that you need to learn or relearn the concepts presented in this course, we recommended that you take the following courses as needed before attempting a teacher licensing exam:

        • Unit 1: Review of Numbers and Operational Expressions

          This unit reviews different basic mathematical concepts and skills necessary before achieving mastery in Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics. Before starting any of the other units in this course, you should already be able to identify real numbers and their locations on the number line, solve problems using four operations with rational numbers, and interpret expressions involving the order of operations. To test your grasp of these concepts, do the practice activities in this unit and complete the unit assessment. These are ungraded opportunities to check your understanding.

          Completing this unit should take you approximately 3 hours.

        • Unit 2: Geometry and Measurement

          In this unit, you will explore the properties of basic geometric two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, as well as the units of measurements of geometric and physical properties of objects.

          Completing this unit should take you approximately 32 hours.

        • Unit 3: Algebra

          This unit explores several essential algebra skills: working with algebraic expressions, solving linear and quadratic equations, and representing them on the coordinate plane. You will also learn how to apply algebraic expressions, equations, and graphs to describe and analyze word problems.

          Completing this unit should take you approximately 26 hours.

        • Unit 4: Probability and Statistics

          This unit is devoted to statistics, a branch of mathematics concerned with representation, analysis, and interpretation of data. It also involves the study of probability, which is the analysis of outcomes of random events.

          Completing this unit should take you approximately 11 hours.

          To receive a free Course Completion Certificate, you will need to earn a grade of 70% or higher on this final exam. Your grade for the exam will be calculated as soon as you complete it. If you do not pass the exam on your first try, you can take it again as many times as you want, with a 7-day waiting period between each attempt.

          Once you pass this final exam, you will be awarded a free Course Completion Certificate.
