Last week, I traveled to Machakos to visit my family for the weekend. I left Nairobi on Friday evening and arrived just before 8 p.m., tired but happy to be home. My mum had cooked chapati and ndengu, and we sat together catching up over dinner. On Saturday morning, I helped my dad in the farm—he was digging around the mango trees while I fetched water from the nearby borehole. Later, my siblings and I walked to the market to buy some vegetables and a few snacks. In the afternoon, there was a harambee at our neighbor’s home, so we passed by to show support and greet people. As the sun was setting, I sat outside with my aunt as we roasted maize and shared stories. On Sunday, we attended church at the local AIC, and afterward, we visited my grandma who lives a few plots away. She was happy to see me and gave me some sweet bananas from her garden. It was a simple weekend, but it reminded me how refreshing life back home can be.
