Parts of Speech Discussion

Parts of speech are the basic categories of words based on their function in a sentence. There are eight traditional parts of speech in English:

1. Noun – Names a person, place, thing, or idea.
   Example: cat, London, happiness

2. Pronoun – Replaces a noun.
   Example: he, she, it, they

3. Verb – Expresses an action or state of being.
   Example: run, is, think

4. Adjective – Describes or modifies a noun or pronoun.
   Example: blue, fast, happy

5. Adverb – Describes or modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
   Example: quickly, very, well

6. Preposition – Shows a relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word in the sentence.
   Example: in, on, at, by

7. Conjunction – Connects words, phrases, or clauses.
   Example: and, but, because

8. Interjection – Expresses strong emotion or surprise.
   Example: wow! oh! ouch!
