Vocabulary Strategies

Today, I explored a new way to build my vocabulary by using the Frayer Model, a strategy that helps deepen understanding of words through four categories: definition, characteristics, examples, and non-examples. I chose the environmental word "biodiversity" to try it out. Writing its definition as “the variety of living organisms in an area,” I then listed characteristics such as including different species of plants, animals, and microorganisms. I gave examples like rainforests and coral reefs—places rich in life. For non-examples, I included areas with low species variety, like deserts or urban parking lots.

This strategy helped me see the word from different angles. It made the meaning clearer and easier to remember. Along the way, I also encountered and learned the words "ecosystem" and "conservation," which are closely related to biodiversity. Overall, the Frayer Model was a helpful tool, and I plan to keep using it to strengthen my vocabulary in science and other subjects.
