Sentence Types Discussion

By Purpose (Function)

1. Declarative Sentence

   • Purpose: Makes a statement

   • Ends with: a period (.)

   • Example:

     The sun is shining.

2. Interrogative Sentence

   • Purpose: Asks a question

   • Ends with: a question mark (?)

   • Example:

     Are you coming to the party?

3. Imperative Sentence

   • Purpose: Gives a command, request, or instruction

   • Ends with: a period (.) or exclamation mark (!)

   • Example:

     Please close the door.
     Stop talking!

4. Exclamatory Sentence

   • Purpose: Expresses strong feeling or emotion

   • Ends with: an exclamation mark (!)

   • Example:

     What a beautiful sunset!

II. By Structure (Form)

1. Simple Sentence

   • Definition: One independent clause (one complete idea)

   • Example:

     I like pizza.

2. Compound Sentence

   • Definition: Two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
