parts of speech

While reviewing the Parts of Speech resources, I came across a couple of sentences that helped me better understand how different parts of speech work together. One sentence that stood out was, “Quickly, the small dog ran across the yard.” In this sentence, I noticed that “quickly” is an adverb describing how the dog ran, “small” is an adjective describing the dog, “dog” and “yard” are nouns, “ran” is a verb, “across” is a preposition, and “the” is an article. Another helpful sentence was, “She happily gave her friend a gift.” From this example, I identified “she” and “her” as pronouns, “happily” as an adverb modifying the verb “gave,” which is the main verb, and “friend” and “gift” as nouns. These examples helped me understand how each part of speech functions in a sentence and how identifying them can improve both writing and grammar. I look forward to seeing what sentences others found useful and comparing the parts of speech they identified.
