I chose a short passage from The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway because it uses simple yet vivid language, and it helped me better understand how different parts of speech work together to set a mood.

Passage:

In the morning it was raining. A fog had come over the mountains. The plateau was dull and gloomy, and the shapes of the trees and the house were changed. I walked beyond the town to look at the weather. The bad weather was coming over the mountains from the sea.

Here are some examples of parts of speech I found:

  • Nounsmorning, fog, mountains, plateau, shapes, trees, house, town, weather, sea
(These are the people, places, or things the passage describes.)

  • Verbswas, raining, had come, were changed, walked, look, was coming
(These show actions or states of being.)

  • Adjectivesbad, dull, gloomy
(These describe the nouns, helping set the mood.)

  • Pronounsit, I
(These take the place of nouns.)

  • Prepositionsin, over, beyond, to, from
(These show relationships between other words.)

  • Articlesthe, a
(These are used before nouns to specify them.)

This passage really shows how simple words, when carefully chosen, can create a strong sense of atmosphere. I’d love to see what other sentences you all picked, and if you found any adverbs or conjunctions I might’ve missed!
