"Part of speech" refers to the category a word belongs to based on its function in a sentence. There are eight main parts of speech in English:

  1. Noun – names a person, place, thing, or idea.
    Example: boy, school, love

  2. Pronoun – replaces a noun.
    Example: he, she, it, they

  3. Verb – shows action or state of being.
    Example: run, eat, is, are

  4. Adjective – describes a noun or pronoun.
    Example: big, happy, blue

  5. Adverb – describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
    Example: quickly, very, well

  6. Preposition – shows relationship between a noun/pronoun and other words.
    Example: in, on, at, under

  7. Conjunction – connects words or groups of words.
    Example: and, but, or, because

  8. Interjection – expresses strong feeling or emotion.
    Example: wow! oh! hey!
