Sentences can be classified in two main ways:

1. By Function (Purpose)


This classification depends on what the sentence is doing.


1. Declarative Sentence – States a fact or opinion.

Example: The sun rises in the east.



2. Interrogative Sentence – Asks a question.

Example: Where are you going?



3. Imperative Sentence – Gives a command, request, or instruction.

Example: Please close the door.



4. Exclamatory Sentence – Expresses strong feelings or emotions.

Example: What a beautiful day it is!

2. By Structure (Form)


This classification depends on the number and type of clauses.


1. Simple Sentence – Has one independent clause.

Example: She reads every night.



2. Compound Sentence – Has two or more independent clauses joined by a conjunction or punctuation.

Example: I wanted to go for a walk, but it started raining.



3. Complex Sentence – Has one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

Example: I stayed home because it was raining.



4. Compound-Complex Sentence – Has two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

Example: I stayed home because it was raining, and I watched moviea
