Parts of speech are categories that classify words according to their function in a sentence. There are eight main parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Each has its own role—nouns name people, places, things, or ideas; pronouns replace nouns; verbs show action or state of being; adjectives describe nouns; adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs; prepositions show relationships between words; conjunctions connect words or clauses; and interjections express emotions. Each part of speech can have different types, such as common or proper nouns, personal or relative pronouns, and coordinating or subordinating conjunctions. Words are identified based on their function and position in a sentence, and many words can serve as more than one part of speech depending on context. In modern grammar, articles like a, an, the are often treated as determiners. Understanding parts of speech is essential for building correct sentence structures, improving grammar, and enhancing overall communication skills.
