Teacher: What is a sentence?

Student: A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought.

Teacher: What are the two main parts of a sentence?

Student: A sentence has a subject (who/what the sentence is about) and a predicate (what is said about the subject).

Teacher: Can you give me an example?

Student: Yes. The boy runs. → Subject = The boy, Predicate = runs.

Teacher: Good. Now, how many types of sentences are there based on purpose?


Student: Four types:

1. Declarative – I like English.

2. Interrogative – Do you like English?

3. Imperative – Close the door.

4. Exclamatory – What a beautiful day!


Teacher: Excellent. What about sentence structure?

Student: There are four main structures:


1. Simple Sentence – She reads books.

2. Compound Sentence – I like tea, and he likes coffee.

3. Complex Sentence – I will go if it doesn’t rain.

4. Compound-Complex Sentence – I like tea, and he likes coffee because it keeps him awake.
