Discussion Post: Parts of Speech
While reading the Parts of Speech resources, I learned some new and useful things. One sentence that I found interesting was:
“Elizabeth was a beautiful princess.”
From this sentence, I identified the following parts of speech:
-
Elizabeth → Noun (proper noun, the name of a person)
-
was → Verb (linking verb)
-
a → Article (determiner)
-
beautiful → Adjective (describes the noun)
-
princess → Noun (common noun)
Another sentence that I think is important is:
“Unfortunately, a dragon smashed her castle.”
From this sentence, I identified:
-
Unfortunately → Adverb (describes how the action happened)
-
dragon → Noun
-
smashed → Verb (past tense action)
-
castle → Noun
I think these examples are helpful because they show how different parts of speech work together to create meaning in a sentence.
