A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It usually has two main parts: the subject, which tells who or what the sentence is about, and the predicate, which tells something about the subject. For example, in the sentence “The boy runs fast,” the subject is “The boy” and the predicate is “runs fast.” A sentence must begin with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark such as a period, question mark, or exclamation point. Knowing how to form sentences is important because it is the basic unit of communication in both speaking and writing.
