Parts of speech are word categories based on their function and role within a sentence, with the eight traditional parts in English being nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Understanding parts of speech is fundamental for creating clear and grammatically correct sentences, as each type of word has a specific purpose, like a noun naming a person or place, or a verb expressing an action.

The Eight Parts of Speech

Noun: A word that names a person, place, thing, or idea (e.g., Ritu, house, chair).

Pronoun: A word that takes the place of a noun to avoid repetition (e.g., they, them, he).

Verb: A word that expresses an action, occurrence, or state of being (e.g., eat, walk, study).

Adjective: A word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun (e.g., red, tall, soft).

Adverb: A word that modifies verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, often indicating how, when, where, or to what extent (e.g., gracefully, yesterday, very).

Preposition: A word that shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word in the sentence (e.g., on, from, at).

Conjunction: A word that connects words, phrases, or clauses (e.g., and, but, because).

Interjection: A word or phrase that expresses sudden emotion and is grammatically unrelated to the rest of the sentence (e.g., Wow!, Oops!).
