Vocabulary building

Today, I decided to try using context clues to build my vocabulary. While reading an article about education, I encountered unfamiliar words like “metacognition” and “scaffolded.” Instead of checking the dictionary right away, I tried to understand their meanings by reading the sentences around them.

For example, the sentence said, “Teachers encourage metacognition by helping students think about how they learn.” From that, I figured out that metacognition means thinking about one’s own thinking. Later, I confirmed it in the dictionary, and I was correct!

This strategy worked well for me because it made me think deeply about the meaning of the text and improved my comprehension. I also learned new words in a natural way.

New words I learned:

  • Metacognition – awareness of one’s own thought process
  • Scaffolded – supported step by step in learning

I will continue using context clues whenever I read, because it helps me become an independent learner and understand words more meaningfully
