There are eights parts of speech -these help us make all kinds of messages.

1. Nouns name a person, a place, a thing or an idea. They can be common or proper, concrete or abstract. They have both a singular and plural form (desk, flower, singer).

2. Pronouns take a noun's place. We have various types of pronouns: personal pronouns, reflexive pronouns, relative pronous, possessive pronouns (he, I, they).

3. Adjectives describe a noun or a pronoun. When describing nouns, adjectives come before nouns. However, when the sentence uses state or linking verb, the adjective appears after the state or linking verb. Also, adjectiveas do not have a number (beautiful, large, red, smart).

4. Verbs describe an action or a state. Main verbs show what the subject does or what state the subject is in, helping verbs show tension and help us create questions and negative statements, modal verbs show special condition like ability/probability/suggestion (speak, sing, feel, walk).

5. Adverbs describe adjectives, verbs or other adverbs. When describing verbs, there are adverbs of manner, adverbs of place, advers of time and advers of frequency (happily, quickly, now, never).

6. Prepositions show a relationship of place, time, location or direction between words (in, on, over, at, to).

7. Conjunctions connect words, phrases and clauses. They act like a bridge. There are three types of conjunctions: coordinating, subordinating and correlative. (for, and, but, when).

8. Interjections are spoken or written expressions of emotion. They are common in spoken English but rare in written English because they are considered very casual (wow, yikes, aha, yay).
