A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought and typically contains at least a subject and a predicate. Sentences can be classified by function into four types: declarative (makes a statement), interrogative (asks a question), imperative (gives a command), and exclamatory (shows strong emotion). They can also be classified by structure: simple (one independent clause), compound (two or more independent clauses), complex (one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses), and compound-complex (multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent clause). Understanding sentence structure and function is essential for clear writing, as it allows a writer to vary rhythm, emphasize ideas, and convey meaning with precision.
