In English grammar, parts of speech are categories that show how words function inside a sentence.
Every sentence is built by combining different types of words, and understanding these categories helps learners read, write, and speak correctly.

English has eight main parts of speech:


1. Nouns

A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea.

  • person → teacher, doctor, Ravi

  • place → school, city, park

  • thing → book, table, phone

  • idea → happiness, freedom, love

The student opened the book in the classroom.


2. Pronouns

A pronoun replaces a noun to avoid repetition.

Examples
I, you, he, she, it, we, they, them, his, ours

In a sentence

Riya has a laptop. She uses it daily.


3. Verbs

A verb shows action or state of being.

Action verbs
run, eat, write, play, speak

Linking verbs
is, am, are, was, were

In a sentence

The baby is sleeping.
They play cricket.


4. Adjectives

An adjective describes a noun or pronoun.

Examples
big, small, happy, blue, fast

In a sentence

He bought a new phone.
The red car is fast.


5. Adverbs

An adverb describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Many adverbs end in -ly.

Examples
quickly, very, slowly, always, here

In a sentence

She speaks clearly.
The train moves very fast.


6. Prepositions

A preposition shows relationship (time, place, direction).

Examples
in, on, at, under, between, near, after, before

In a sentence

The keys are on the table.
We will meet after lunch.


7. Conjunctions

A conjunction joins words or sentences.

Examples
and, but, or, because, although, so

In a sentence

I wanted to go, but it was raining.
She studies hard because she has exams.


8. Interjections

An interjection shows sudden emotion.

Examples
oh!, wow!, hey!, oops!, alas!

In a sentence

Wow! That movie was amazing.
Oops! I dropped my pen.
