Now that you know some specific strategies you can use to recognize and learn academic vocabulary, you can use those strategies more confidently to become a successful college student.

In this unit, we have reviewed the importance of learning and using academic and specialized vocabulary. Now that you know some specific strategies you can use to recognize and learn academic vocabulary, you can use those strategies more confidently to become a successful college student.

Instructions

For this discussion, choose a page from the Earth Science textbook available here:

As you read, identify general, academic, and technical vocabulary in the article below and place the words in the correct category. Remember to use the AWL, a dictionary, and the context. It might be helpful to use a table like the one below, but you can use whatever format is easiest for you.

Then, share your answers and compare your list with your classmates' lists. Reply to your classmates with feedback or suggestions about their word classification.
