Conclusions

The very last paragraph of a multi-paragraph essay is the conclusion. Conclusions are typically much easier to write than introductions and often tend to be short. Read this section to learn how to write this final piece of an essay.

At the end of any multi-paragraph essay there should be a conclusion paragraph that brings the ideas of the essay to a logical closing point. There are three rules you need to know about conclusions – two things it must do and one thing it must not do.

  • restate your three or four main ideas – if it is easier for you, consider just rewording the thesis statement
  • make a closing statement which brings your ideas to a close – this could be what you learned or a plan of action going forward
  • DO NOT include any new information or statements that could raise questions for your readers

When we look at the conclusion to The Corner Store essay, we can see that it follows the above three rules. I have highlighted the three main ideas in grey and placed the closing statement in italics so you can see these two important parts of a good conclusion. You might also notice that it is very short – only two sentences – and that is perfectly fine. Conclusions are frequently the shortest paragraph in an essay.

With easy slow-paced work, great people, and pay and benefits that work really well for my circumstances, I am very grateful to work at The Corner Store. I don't plan to work in retail for my whole life, but while I am in college, my job at The Corner Store is really perfect for me.
