There are eight parts of speech in the English language: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. The part of speech indicates how the word functions in meaning as well as grammatically within the sentence.
For example:
- Noun – Tom lives in New York.
- Pronoun – Did she find the book she was looking for?
- Verb – I reached home.
- Adverb – The tea is too hot.
- Adjective – The movie was amazing.
- Preposition – The candle was kept under the table.
- conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so you can remember them by using the mnemonic device FANBOYS.
- Interjections: OUCH! Wow! hey!
