Parts of speech are the basic categories of words based on their function in a sentence. There are eight traditional parts of speech in English:
Noun
Names a person, place, thing, or idea
Examples: cat, London, love, book
Pronoun
Replaces a noun
Examples: he, she, it, they, who
Verb
Expresses an action or a state of being
Examples: run, is, jump, think
Adjective
Describes or modifies a noun or pronoun
Examples: happy, tall, red, exciting
Adverb
Modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb
Often answers how, when, where, or to what extent
Examples: quickly, very, well, yesterday
Preposition
Shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word
Examples: in, on, at, by, with, under
Conjunction
Connects words, phrases, or clauses
Examples: and, but, or, because, although
Interjection
Expresses strong emotion or a sudden burst of feeling
Examples: wow, ouch, hey, oh
