Miners benefit from doing the computing work to find a special hash of the record that starts with a nonce. Many miners compete to find this answer, but only the one showing the proof-of-work gets rewarded. This page explains how a nonce is used in the proof-of-work system and how mining is used to find the right nonce-hash combination.
