Upon successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • describe the structure and function of a typical biological membrane;
  • describe characteristics of a membrane, solutes, and solvents;
  • predict where molecules will move and how the mass of a cell may change;
  • describe the characteristics of different cell types;
  • classify cells as prokaryotic or eukaryotic, unicellular or multicellular, animal or plant (or other);
  • indicate the functions of the organelles of different cell types;
  • explain how large signal molecules get their signal into the cell; and
  • describe the mechanisms of transport across biological membranes.
