Motivation to use a DSS

Researchers have conducted studies to enhance understanding of why and when users may become motivated to use a DSS. Use of an expert system is found to enhance the engagement of users and increase DSS use. In contrast, passive DSS use leads to deficient user behavior. This effect can be attributed to lack of motivation to use a DSS. The Perceptions of Task Value scale can be modified to obtain the Perception of DSS scale to measure a user's motivation to use a DSS. The four components in the scale include interest, importance, utility, and cost. Although these components can be differentiated, it is not easy to distinguish their relations. Motivation to use a DSS is predicted to be high when the DSS is perceived to be high in interest, importance or utility, or the opportunity cost of using the DSS is low, and vice versa.
